Highlights at a glance
Glufosinate-ammonium is a low-toxicity, non-selective herbicide with broad-spectrum weed control activity. Its active ingredient, phosphinothricin (PPT), inhibits glutamine synthetase (GS), disrupting amino acid synthesis and causing ammonia accumulation, which ultimately leads to plant death. It effectively controls both annual and perennial grass and broadleaf weeds at application rates of 0.4–2.0 kg/ha. Widely used in orchards, vineyards, and non-crop areas, it is also compatible with resistant crop systems. Through genetic engineering, the glufosinate resistance gene has been successfully introduced into over 20 crops, including corn, soybean, cotton, and rice, leading to the commercialization of the LibertyLink® system. These transgenic crops allow safe use of glufosinate at doses up to 2.0 kg/ha, providing effective weed management with minimal crop injury. Resistant varieties are now widely grown in North America and increasingly adopted in Asia, Australia, and Europe.
