The rescue and salvage system has cumulatively rescued over 90,000 individuals in distress.
The reporter learned at the "Maritime Traffic Safety" themed forum of the 2026 North Bund International Shipping Forum held on October 21 that, over the 75 years since its establishment, the salvage and rescue system has built a modern, professional salvage system encompassing full-scale coverage, operating round-the-clock, combining sea and river capabilities, with rapid response and high efficiency in handling operations. As of September 25 this year, the salvage system has rescued over 90,000 people in distress, 5,726 stranded vessels, salvaged 1,923 sunken ships, and recovered property worth approximately 195.03 billion yuan.
The "Maritime Traffic Safety" themed forum was jointly organized by the Ministry of Transport Salvage and Rescue Bureau and the Maritime Safety Administration, with the East Sea Rescue Bureau and Shanghai Maritime Safety Administration co-hosting. Under the theme "Upholding Integrity and Innovation, Resilient and Far-reaching – Building a New Global Shipping Safety Frontier Together," the forum focused on the concept of a shared maritime future and accelerating the construction of a strong transportation nation, coordinating high-quality development and high-level safety. It discussed topics such as modernizing salvage and rescue operations, integrating maritime supervision service assurance, international maritime search and rescue cooperation, and green intelligent shipping, to collectively plan strategies for safe, intelligent, and efficient rescue measures and explore healthy and sustainable development paths for the shipping industry.
The forum unveiled four major achievements: the digitized safety operation control platform for maritime rescue flights, the Yangshan VTS Genie intelligent decision-support system, the deep-sea underwater emergency search key technologies and engineering applications, and the scaled application of the nation's first fisheries-specific electronic nautical chart. These developments provide strong support for enhancing maritime safety capabilities, promoting the green and intelligent transformation of shipping, and advancing salvage and maritime technology innovation cooperation.
