Fed Watcher: The Fed’s Divide Centers on the Inflation Outlook, Not Policy Direction
July 9: Wall Street Journal reporter Nick Timiraos said the minutes of the Federal Reserve’s June meeting show that differences among officials mainly stem from divergent views on the future economic outlook, rather than a fundamental conflict over whether to raise or cut interest rates.
Two possible scenarios have emerged within the Fed. If inflation remains persistently high, almost all officials believe higher interest rates would need to be maintained, or policy may even need to be tightened further. However, if inflation quickly falls back toward the 2% target, almost all officials also believe the current interest-rate level could be maintained, or rates could even be cut in the future.
Timiraos noted that the phrase “quickly falls back to 2%” is highly important, as it preserves room for policy adjustment. The real question officials are focused on now is whether inflation will rebound persistently or return to a downward path.
Timiraos concluded that the Fed’s next move will still depend on economic data, especially inflation performance. Markets had previously priced in rate cuts, but the latest minutes show that the policy outlook remains highly uncertain.
Analyst: Fed June Minutes Send Hawkish Signal, Rate-Cut Expectations Cool
July 9: InvestingLive analyst Adam Button said the Federal Reserve’s June meeting minutes delivered a hawkish signal, showing that officials remain highly concerned about inflation risks.
Button believes the focus of Fed policy is shifting, with market attention moving from “when rate cuts will begin” to “whether rate hikes are possible.” The minutes showed that some officials expect interest rates at year-end may be higher than current levels.
He also noted that U.S. core inflation pressure remains evident. Price increases in areas such as airfares and petrochemical products suggest inflation is not being driven entirely by short-term factors. Overall, internal Fed disagreement over the future rate path has widened, but high inflation remains the key factor shaping policy direction.
