Highlights at a glance
An explosion at IFFCO's Phulpur nitrogen fertilizer plant in Uttar Pradesh on Tuesday killed 2 and injured 16, suspected to be caused by an ammonia tank blast due to a natural gas pipeline leak. The plant, with urea and liquid ammonia production lines dating back to 1981 and 1997, has a yearly capacity of 1.7 million tons of urea and 1 million tons of liquid ammonia. This incident follows a similar gas leak at the same facility on December 22, 2020, which also resulted in 2 deaths and 10 injuries. With April being the traditional maintenance period for Indian urea plants, this accident may lead other facilities to advance their shutdown schedules for safety inspections, potentially affecting domestic urea supply. Safety practices and aging infrastructure at industrial plants remain critical concerns.
