Highlights at a glance
In December 2023, China's urea production reached 5.1891 million tons, down 2.64% month-on-month but up 15.06% year-on-year. Full-year 2023 production totaled 61.0763 million tons, an 8.33% increase from 2022. Average daily output in December was 167,400 tons, a 5.78% decline from November but significantly higher than the same period last year. The urea industry’s operating rate averaged 79.27% in December, slightly lower than November but 13.54% higher than a year ago. For the full year, average operating rate was 78.90%, up 9.47% year-on-year. Production declines were driven by seasonal maintenance shutdowns, particularly among gas-based producers, coupled with weak demand and sluggish sales, prompting temporary plant closures and reduced output. Market supply tightened toward month-end. The operating rate is expected to remain low in the coming months due to ongoing maintenance and subdued market conditions.
