Bohai Sea Communication Perception Network Launched and Operational
On October 15, the Bohai Sea communication and sensing network, jointly constructed by the Beihai Navigation Safety Center of the Ministry of Transport, Tianjin Branch of CNOOC (China) Co., Ltd., and Tianjin Mobile Communications Group Co., Ltd., was officially launched, marking a new stage of high-speed interconnection and comprehensive sensing in Bohai. It will provide high-speed, stable, and reliable broadband communication and real-time sensing services for various maritime activities.
Bohai is an important navigable sea area in northern China, with dense shipping routes and frequent marine production activities. However, the central sea area once faced communication and sensing bottlenecks, including insufficient signal coverage and limited environmental sensing capabilities. To address this, the Maritime Bureau of the Ministry of Transport coordinated and advanced efforts to innovate a cross-industry joint construction mechanism, leveraging offshore oil and gas platforms and submarine cable resources of the Bohai Oilfield to build a network of ultra-long-distance communication and sensing base stations at sea.
According to reports, the Bohai Sea communication and sensing network has achieved four core technological innovations: self-controllable sensing capability, high-speed and stable transmission links, significantly expanded network coverage, and intelligent integration of the digital foundation. It integrates key facilities such as 5G base stations, VHF (Very High Frequency) base stations, AIS (Automatic Identification System) base stations, and hydrological observation stations, collaboratively enabling high-speed data transmission, voice dispatching, ship-shore information interaction, and marine hydrological monitoring functionalities.
As of now, 48 5G base stations, 8 VHF base stations, 6 AIS base stations, and 4 hydrological observation stations have been built, achieving a comprehensive signal coverage rate of 95%, with 5G network coverage exceeding 80%. The network provides full signal coverage for Bohai's major ports, anchorages, and shipping routes. Upon completion, it is expected to directly benefit 300,000 ships and 5 million passengers annually, providing precise support for maritime traffic control and emergency rescue while laying a solid communication and data foundation for industries such as oil and gas development, fishing, offshore wind power, and intelligent shipping development.
Next, all parties will continue to strengthen blind spot elimination, enhance network performance, deepen multi-source data integration and communication sensing applications, and strive to make Bohai a benchmark region for comprehensive coverage of advanced communication sensing technologies, accumulating construction experience for nationwide coastal communication sensing coverage.
