October 8 Urea Daily : Indian Tender Sentiment Settles; Market Waits and Watches
Domestic urea price index:
According to estimates by FDD, on October 8 the urea small-granular price index stood at 1,784.76, down 1.15 from the previous working day, or -0.06% month-on-month, and up 7.96% year-on-year.
Urea futures market:
Today the urea UR2701 contract opened at 1,762, with a high of 1,780, a low of 1,757, a settlement price of 1,769 and a closing price of 1,768. The closing price was +2 versus the previous trading day's settlement price, or +0.11%. The basis for the 01 contract in Shandong stood at -28. Open interest in the 01 contract fell by 4,721 lots today, with current open interest at 226,409 lots.
Today the urea futures market displayed narrow, mildly firm range-bound trading, mainly supported by sentiment premiums arising from the Indian tender and Middle East issues. At the physical level, however, the domestic market has been relatively stable: although the pre-holiday Indian tender and the fourth batch of export quotas lifted sentiment, the core logic - that these factors cannot in practice resolve the domestic supply-demand imbalance - remains unchanged, and market follow-through has been limited. Compounded by the fact that the tender's offered volume still far exceeds the tendered volume, the market retains a cautious view on the final price. At this stage, actual downstream demand has shown no clear improvement: agricultural application is in a seasonal lull, the industrial segment remains cautious in its purchasing, and there has been no substantive improvement in fundamentals overall. In summary, urea futures are still caught between bullish export expectations and weak physical fundamentals, and conditions for a trending move are not yet in place; the board is likely to continue trading in a narrow range. Going forward, it will be necessary to keep tracking the outcome and volumes of the Indian tender, the phased pace of fertilizer application demand, and the release of reserve demand.
Physical market analysis:
Today the domestic urea physical market was broadly stable with minor fluctuations. Although the pre-holiday fourth batch of export quotas and the Indian tender provided sentiment support, market follow-through during the National Day holiday was limited and no clear price driver has emerged; participants are mostly waiting for post-holiday board movements and the tender result, and quotations at a few mainstream-region producers have softened. At this stage the market is predominantly in a wait-and-see mode with no clear direction, and attention is focused on the Indian urea tender result - although given the high volume of offers, the market is unable to form an optimistic expectation. From a supply-demand perspective, overall supply remains ample; on the demand side, autumn agricultural demand for urea is limited, operating rates in compound fertilizer and downstream industrial segments have improved only modestly, and the release of substantive demand is weak. In summary, the short-term urea market is likely to remain range-bound and consolidating, with mainstream quotations broadly stable and individual producers making small, flexible adjustments in line with their own order intake and inventory positions. Going forward, the key focus will be the progress of the Indian tender and the timing of real demand and reserve demand.
Taken as a whole, the current domestic urea physical market is trading soft and range-bound. On the supply side, previously idled plants have progressively restarted, daily industry output has risen, supply pressure is gradually building, and overall availability remains loose. On the demand side, although producers have an incentive to sell and ship ahead of the holiday, end-user demand has shown no marked improvement; downstream buyers continue to cover only essential requirements, autumn agricultural stock-building is limited, and compound fertilizer and industrial operating rates have improved only modestly, so the release of substantive demand is weak. The market is currently caught between cost support and a floor provided by export diversion on one hand, and pressure from loose supply-demand on the other. Short-term prices may still soften further, but the downside is limited; should prices fall to low levels, bargain-hunting may be triggered.
