Highlights at a glance
Oxolinic acid is a second-generation quinolone antibiotic with broad-spectrum activity against Gram-negative and some Gram-positive bacteria, but ineffective against fungi or Mycobacterium tuberculosis. It works by inhibiting DNA gyrase and blocking DNA synthesis, leading to bacterial cell death. Widely used in aquaculture, it effectively treats infections caused by pathogens like Vibrio anguillarum and Aeromonas hydrophila in fish and shrimp, offering strong bacteriostatic effects with low dosage and no cross-resistance. Additionally, it serves as an agricultural bactericide, particularly effective in controlling rice bacterial grain rot and seedling rot through seed treatment—via soaking or coating—with high efficacy. It also manages diseases such as potato blackleg, apple and pear fire blight, soft rot, and Chinese cabbage soft rot through foliar application. Its targeted action on bacterial DNA replication makes it a valuable tool in both aquaculture and crop protection.
