Highlights at a glance
Paraquat (PQ) is a fast-acting, non-selective, contact herbicide belonging to the quaternary ammonium salt class, known for its rapid destruction of plant chloroplast lamellae, effectively halting photosynthesis and chlorophyll synthesis. Within 2–3 hours of application, visible damage and discoloration appear on plant tissues. Marketed as Gramoxone, it strongly affects green tissues of both monocot and dicot plants but lacks systemic movement, impacting only contacted areas. It does not penetrate bark or persist in soil, making it safe for pre-sowing weed control and minimizing harm to roots and seeds. Widely used in orchards, plantations, and non-crop areas, it controls annual weeds and suppresses perennial ones, though regrowth from underground structures may occur. Paraquat poses no residual soil activity and is safe for crops when applied correctly, avoiding green plant parts. Its role in efficient, targeted weed management supports sustainable agricultural practices.
