Highlights at a glance
2,4-D (2,4-dichlorophenoxyacetic acid) is the world’s first synthetic organic herbicide, widely used since the 1940s. It belongs to the phenoxy herbicide family and acts as a systemic hormone mimic, disrupting plant growth by simulating auxin. This causes uncontrolled cell division, stem swelling, tissue deformation, and eventual death—particularly in dicotyledonous weeds, which are highly sensitive to hormonal changes. Absorbed through roots, stems, and leaves, 2,4-D is effective in wheat, corn, rice, and sorghum fields against broadleaf weeds like Artemisia, Amaranthus, and Cyperus. It also controls aquatic and terrestrial weeds in non-crop areas such as roadsides, railways, and forests, especially when combined with glyphosate. In orchards and plantations, it safely clears inter-row weeds without damaging deep-rooted trees, improving nutrient availability and canopy ventilation. Its selective action and broad application make 2,4-D a cornerstone of modern weed management.
