Thiourea Product Introduction
Thiourea is a white, shiny, bitter-tasting crystal. It is soluble in cold water and ethanol, slightly soluble in ether, and easily hygroscopic in air. It converts to ammonium thiocyanate at 150℃, has reducing properties, and can reduce free iodine to iodide ions. Thiourea is highly reactive and used to prepare various compounds. It can react with multiple oxidizing agents to form organic compounds and can also form easily soluble addition compounds with inorganic compounds.
1. Properties
Thiourea is a colorless crystalline solid with a special pungent odor. It has good solubility and is soluble in polar solvents such as water, alcohols, and ethers. Thiourea can decompose at high temperatures to produce mercaptans, formamides, and other products.
2. Preparation Methods
There are two main methods for preparing thiourea:
Reaction of urea and sulfur: Heat urea with sulfur under acidic conditions to produce thiourea.
Reaction of ammonium sulfate and ammonia water: React ammonium sulfate with ammonia water at an appropriate temperature to generate thiourea.
3. Uses
Thiourea is mainly used as a raw material for synthesizing drugs such as sulfathiazole and methionine. It is also used as a raw material for dyes, dyeing auxiliaries, resins, and molding powders, as well as a vulcanization accelerator for rubber, a flotation agent for metal minerals, a catalyst for the production of phthalic anhydride and fumaric acid, and a metal corrosion inhibitor. In the field of photographic materials, it can be used as a developer and toner, and it is also applied in the electroplating industry. Additionally, thiourea is used in diazo photosensitive paper, synthetic resin coatings, anion exchange resins, germination promoters, fungicides, and many other aspects. It is also used as a chemical fertilizer.
