Ferrous Sulphate Monohydrate Product Introduction
Ferrous sulfate is a non-toxic, odorless, grayish-white to beige powder with a slightly astringent taste. Ferrous sulfate monohydrate contains iron, a raw material for the synthesis of hemoglobin antibodies in animals. It can be used as a feed-grade mineral feed additive to supplement the blood of poultry and livestock, promoting growth and development and enhancing disease resistance in poultry, livestock, and aquatic animals.
I. Main Properties
Ferrous sulfate is a blue-green monoclinic crystal or granular substance, odorless, with a relative density of 1.898 and a melting point of 64℃. It is soluble in water (48.6 g/L at 50℃), slightly soluble in alcohol, and soluble in anhydrous methanol. At 64–90℃, ferrous sulfate loses six molecules of water of crystallization; when heated to 300℃, it loses all its water of crystallization, becoming anhydrous. When red-hot, it decomposes to produce ferric oxide and release sulfur dioxide and sulfur trioxide, which are corrosive. It effloresces in dry air and is easily oxidized by humid air.
II. Uses
In the field of water treatment, ferrous sulfate can be used to clean and treat iron and sulfide ions in water to improve water quality. It can also be used as a fertilizer to provide plants with the iron they need, promoting plant growth and nutrient absorption. There are several methods for preparing ferrous sulfate, one common method being the reaction of iron powder or iron sulfides with sulfuric acid. Regarding safety information, there are several precautions for ferrous sulfate: Avoid direct contact with skin and eyes when preparing or handling ferrous sulfate to prevent irritation and injury. When using ferrous sulfate, it should be done in a well-ventilated area to avoid inhaling its dust and vapors. Ferrous sulfate should be stored in a dry, well-ventilated place, away from fire and oxidizers. When using ferrous sulfate, appropriate protective equipment such as gloves, goggles, and respiratory protection should be worn.
Ferrous sulfate has a wide range of uses. In agriculture, it can be used as a pesticide to control wheat smut, apple and pear scab, and fruit tree rot; it can also be used as a fertilizer to remove moss and lichen from tree trunks. Industrially, it is a raw material for manufacturing magnetic iron oxide, iron oxide red and iron blue inorganic pigments, iron catalysts, and polyferric sulfate. In medicine, it is used as a topical astringent and hematinic. Additionally, ferrous sulfate is used as a chromatographic reagent. Food-grade ferrous sulfate is used as a nutritional supplement, such as an iron fortifier and a color enhancer for fruits and vegetables. Feed-grade ferrous sulfate is used as an iron supplement in feed processing.
