Highlights at a glance
Superphosphate, the oldest water-soluble phosphate fertilizer, contains 12–20% P₂O₅, plus sulfur (3.5–5.5%) and calcium. It’s acidic, hygroscopic, and available as powder or granules. Produced via sulfuric acid treatment of phosphate rock, it delivers fast-acting phosphorus for early crop growth, improves alkaline and sulfur-deficient soils, and supplies secondary nutrients. Widely used as a cost-effective base fertilizer—especially in developing regions—it excels in neutral/calcareous soils but must not be mixed with alkaline or calcium-rich fertilizers. Proper dry storage and safe handling (due to free acid) are essential.
