Ethephon Product Introduction
Ethephon is an organic compound. The pure product is white acicular crystals, and the industrial product is a light brown liquid. It is easily soluble in water, methanol, acetone, ethylene glycol, and propylene glycol, slightly soluble in toluene, and insoluble in petroleum ether. It is used as an agricultural plant growth stimulant. I. Product Properties
The pure product is white acicular crystals. The industrial product is a pale yellow viscous liquid or waxy solid, with a temperature resistance of 74-75℃. It is easily soluble in water, alcohols, and acetone, difficult to dissolve in benzene, and insoluble in petroleum ether. It is easily deliquescent in air, and its aqueous solution is strongly acidic. It is stable in acidic environments with pH 3 and alkaline conditions.
II. Mechanism of Action
Similar to ethylene, ethephon mainly enhances the ability of RNA synthesis in cells and promotes protein synthesis. In plant abscission zones such as petioles, fruit stalks, and petal bases, the increased protein synthesis promotes the resynthesis of cellulase in the abscission zone, thereby accelerating abscission zone formation and leading to organ shedding. Ethephon can enhance enzyme activity; during fruit ripening, it can also activate phosphatase and other enzymes related to fruit ripening, promoting fruit ripening. In aging or diseased plants, ethephon causes changes in peroxidase due to promoting protein synthesis. Ethylene can inhibit the synthesis of endogenous auxin and delay plant growth.

Ethephon has physiological effects such as enhancing latex secretion, accelerating ripening, promoting abscission and senescence, and facilitating flowering, as regulated by plant hormones. It can induce plants to produce ethylene, thereby promoting early maturity of cotton, concentrated boll opening, increasing boll yield, improving quality, promoting early maturity of various fruits such as bananas, citrus, tomatoes, and watermelons, and stimulating latex production in rubber trees, lacquer trees, etc.
