Ferrous Sulphate Product Introduction
Ferrous sulfate is an inorganic substance with the chemical formula FeSO₄. It appears as white powder with no odor. Its crystalline hydrate is heptahydrate at room temperature, commonly known as "Lüfan" (green vitriol), which is a light green crystal. It weathers in dry air, and the surface is oxidized to brown basic ferric sulfate in humid air. It becomes tetrahydrate at 56.6℃ and monohydrate at 65℃. Ferrous sulfate is soluble in water and almost insoluble in ethanol. Its aqueous solution is slowly oxidized in air when cold and faster when hot. Adding alkali or exposure to light can accelerate its oxidation. The relative density (d15) is 1.897. It is irritating. Ferrous sulfate can be used as a chromatographic analysis reagent and a spot analysis reagent for determining platinum, selenium, nitrite and nitrate. It can also be used as a reducing agent, in the manufacture of ferrites, water purification, polymerization catalysts, photoengraving, etc.
I. Properties
It is a blue - green monoclinic crystal or granule with no odor.
The relative density is 1.898, and the melting point is 64℃.
It is soluble in water (48.6g/100mL water at 50℃), slightly soluble in alcohol, and soluble in anhydrous methanol.
It loses 6 crystal waters at 64 - 90℃, and loses all crystal waters when heated to 300℃ to form an anhydrous substance.
When red - hot, it decomposes to form iron trioxide and releases sulfur dioxide and sulfur trioxide.
It is corrosive and will weather in dry air. It is easily oxidized by humid air.
II. Preparation Methods
Sulfuric Acid Method: Mix sulfuric acid with mother liquor, heat to 80℃ with steam, dissolve waste iron filings in the reaction solution. The slightly acidic ferrous sulfate solution generated by the reaction is clarified to remove impurities, then cooled for crystallization and centrifugal dehydration to obtain ferrous sulfate.
Titanium Dioxide By - product Method: The by - product ferrous sulfate from the production of titanium dioxide by decomposing ilmenite with sulfuric acid, which has undergone precipitation, freezing and separation, is recrystallized and refined to obtain ferrous sulfate finished products.
III. Uses
In agriculture, it can be used as a pesticide to control wheat smut, scab of apples and pears, and rot of fruit trees; it can also be used as a fertilizer to remove moss and lichen on tree trunks. It is a raw material for manufacturing magnetic iron oxide, iron oxide red, iron blue inorganic pigments, iron catalysts and polyferric sulfate. In medicine, it is used as a local astringent and hematinic. In addition, it is used as a chromatographic analysis reagent, etc. The food grade is used as a nutritional supplement, such as an iron fortifier and a fruit and vegetable color former. Feed grade ferrous sulfate is used as an iron supplement in feed processing.
IV. Safety
The packaging can be in bulk or polyethylene plastic bags, straw bags or plastic woven bags, with a net weight of 20kg or 50kg per bag. It should be stored in a dry warehouse to prevent weathering; long - term storage will turn yellow (oxidized to ferric iron by air). During transportation, it should be protected from rain, sun and moisture, and must not be mixed with harmful and toxic substances to prevent pollution. In case of fire, put out the fire with water and fire extinguishers.
