Highlights at a glance
Dicalcium phosphate (DCP), available as anhydrous and dihydrate forms, is a white, odorless crystalline powder with the formula CaHPO₄·2H₂O. It is stable in air but loses water at 75°C, forming anhydrous DCP and eventually pyrophosphate at higher temperatures. Slightly soluble in water but readily soluble in dilute acids, it contains approximately 23.29% calcium and 18.00% phosphorus. Proper moisture testing requires temperatures below 75°C to prevent dehydration. Two primary production methods exist: the energy-intensive thermal phosphoric acid method, used for food, pharmaceutical, and toothpaste grades, and the wet phosphoric acid method, widely used in China for feed-grade DCP. The latter involves acid decomposition of phosphorite followed by extraction and neutralization. DCP is a key mineral supplement in animal feed, providing highly bioavailable calcium and phosphorus, promoting growth, improving bone health, enhancing disease resistance, and preventing conditions like rickets and paralysis. Typically added at 1–3% in livestock and poultry diets, it supports faster weight gain and higher survival rates. Beyond its industrial applications, FDD-Global leverages digital platforms to connect agricultural producers and distributors worldwide, enhancing transparency, efficiency, and value across the agricultural supply chain.
